17 RATING | Engagement Cave |
This small cave is situated about 200 metres further up the valley from Sleeping Beauty Cave and on the same side of the stream as the latter. There is a tricky stretch of path just above Sleeping Beauty Cave which must be negotiated before continuing up the valley. At this point the valley starts to open up a little, but it remains secluded and very picturesque. As with Sleeping Beauty Cave, it can provide a convenient base from which to explore Walker's Pass, and it is relatively easy to get to Hidden Valley via one of the spurs to the south of the cave.

Accommodation: 4
Engagement Cave is actually a small hollow beneath a large boulder which - aeons ago - must have tumbled down from the hillside above. It is surrounded by numerous other large boulders which help to improve its shelter and privacy. There is sufficient floor space to accommodate four people with a squeeze, although three is a more realistic figure.
3 COMFORT | The main sleeping area is fairly level and smooth, but quite sandy (or muddy!). |
4 WATER | The main stream passes about 50 metres below the cave and provides a reliable source of water all year round. |
2 POOLS | There are several small "plunge" pools in the stream up the valley from the cave. |
4 SHELTER | The low wall and other large boulders help to ensure that the cave is fairly well protected from the weather. |
4 OUTLOOK | The cave offers a wonderful view of the valley upstream from the cave. The valley has many intriguing features and its seclusion adds to its charm. |
