Accommodation: 8
The cave can accommodate 4 people comfortably and 8 with a squeeze.
4 COMFORT | The floor of the cave is perfectly level, but dusty and covered with small stones. There are plenty of rocks and ledges around the edges of the cave for stacking equipment. |
1 WATER | There is a large, perennial stream about 1 km below the cave which flows over Witch Falls. At this altitude the walk from the cave can be daunting after a long day's hike. If approaching from the south via Witch Falls in the dry season, water should preferably be collected here before heading up to the cave. The approach along the contour path from the north crosses a stream in the valley behind the cave and offers a far easier option for collecting water, but do not expect to find any there in winter. |
1 POOLS | There are some nice pools near Witch Falls, but these are about 1,5 km from the cave and about 200 m below it. |
5 SHELTER | Although it is situated on the edge of an exposed basalt ridge at high altitude, the cave is very sheltered, dry and deep. However, there is a lightning danger and care should be taken to avoid the ridge if approaching the cave during a storm. |
5 OUTLOOK | The cave offers magnificent views towards Cathkin Peak in the south, and over the Natal Midlands to the east. |
